Most food is perfectly safe and enjoyable for dogs to eat, but there are some that should be avoided as they can make your dog ill and lead to long-term health complications

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

  • Avocados: contain persin, which is a chemical compound that is poisonous to dogs. Protect your dog from all parts including, skin, seed and fruit. Avocados cause diarrhoea, vomiting and congestion of the heart.
  • Onions & Garlic. These foods are highly toxic to a dog’s red blood cells, leading to anaemia. All forms, whether they are raw, powdered, dried or cooked can cause vomiting, lack of interest in food, weakness, and breathing problems.
  • Grapes, Raisins, and Grapevines. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney damage or even failure. Even a small number can cause vomiting, lethargy, liver damage, diarrhoea, and depression.
  • Peaches and Plums. The pits of fruits are unsafe. People avoid them and throw them away, but a dog doesn’t and can swallow them causing intestinal obstruction. The pits also contain cyanide, which is a lethal poison to both dogs and humans.

SWEETS

  • Chocolate is dangerous for dogs because it contains theobromine and is toxic to dogs in even small amounts. Symptoms include excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, and even death.
  • Artificial sweetener, in particular Xylitol is found in a variety of candy, gum, and baked goods. It causes insulin to flood the body, resulting in a massive drop in blood sugar, leading to lethargy, vomiting, and coordination problems. Seizures and liver damage are dangerous side effects.
  • Ice Cream. Dogs love ice cream and this is fine in dogs who aren’t lactose intolerant. Dairy products cause diarrhoea and can lead to allergic reactions, such as itchy and scaly skin.

OTHER TOXIC FOODS

  • Macadamia Nuts. As few as six nuts can lead to tremors, paralysis, vomiting, fever, and rapid heartbeat and can even be fatal.
  • Raw Yeast Dough. Yeast must rise before baking, and it will rise in your dog?s stomach leading to abdominal swelling and severe pain. Alcohol poisoning as the yeast ferments in the dog’s digestive tract can also occur
  • Bones and Fat. It’s tempting to give your dog a juicy, meaty bone, but bones can splinter in your dog’s stomach, leading to a pierced stomach or intestines or even in their throats when swallowing. Excessive intake of fat can cause pancreatitis.
