Plants that are toxic for dogs

Let’s face it, most dogs love to eat, and often will eat anything, but we know this can be dangerous. Dogs natural inquisitiveness can cause serious trouble simply because a nibble from our favourite garden plants has turned out to be poisonous to them.

Here are the ten most poisonous plants you should avoid around your garden and home.

RHUBARB

The stalks of this plant are great for making pies with custard, but its leaves contain oxalate, which, in dogs is associated with kidney failure, tremors, and salivation.

LILIES

Lilies are known to be particularly dangerous to cats, but varieties such the Peace Lily, Autumn Crocus, Calla Lily, Amaryllis, Lily of the Valley and Dracaena lily are seen as exceedingly dangerous to dogs. If ingested lilies can cause gastrointestinal problems, tremors, anorexia, and depression.

TOMATO

The tomato plant contains solanine, which is a very toxic ingredient that causes gastrointestinal upsets, depression, decreased cardiac rate, diarrhoea, and weakness in dogs.

CASTOR BEAN

This tropical plant contains the poisonous protein Ricin. If consumed, the seeds can burn the dog?s throat and mouth leading to unquenchable thirst, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Even small amounts can be fatal.

DAFFODILS

A welcome first hint that spring is coming, daffodils are also, unfortunately dangerous for your dog.? They contain lycorine which causes vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and cardiac problems.

ALOE

This plant is great for burns in humans but toxic when ingested by dogs.? Symptoms include vomiting, depression, diarrhoea, anorexia, tremors and change in urine colour.

AZALEA

Also knows as the Rhododendron, this common flowering shrub has toxins that can harm a dog’s cardiovascular system, as well as trigger digestive issues, paralysis, or even death.

MARIJUANA

Besides it being safe for human use, this plant has utterly no benefits for your pet. If ingested, a dog can experience symptoms like seizures, tremors, and even death.

HYACINTH

A highly toxic plant which can cause depression, intense tremors, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

OLEANDER

A beautiful and popular plant, but all parts of this plant contain toxic chemicals that can cause heart failure in both humans and pets.? It can also cause diarrhoea, breathing issues and tremors.
